I know that every parent reckons that their child is wonderful, but I really have been blessed with a beautiful and feisty daughter. She's now seven months old, and recently the she-cactus and I decided that a sibling would be a nice thing for all of us.

About two months ago we had germination, and from the outset I said that it'd be twins. Today we had the first scan, and...

...twins!

After the inital smug I-told-you-so gloss had worn off, the hard reality set in. I'm a PhD ...

Hey all.

I've been eyeing-off an OK astro at the local nursery, but I've been hesitating because it's been rubbed to the skin in several patches, obviously by folk experimenting with the texture of the surface.

Does the white spotting return over time, or should I just keep looking for that perfect specimen?

Trully the best member of the entire cactus family... if there could be only one member of Cactaceae it would be this.

2 Crested Mamms

I guess its my lucky day. i went to Collectors Corner today and found this Mammillaria spinosissima cv 'Pico', it is starting to crest:

It was alongside some normal ones, good for $11. In a 4in pot. Interestingly it doesn't have any flower buds on the crested section. It should develop into a nice cristate specimen in a few years.

and they have many of these but this is an exceptional example of Mammillaria microhelia fma. cristata; a perfect line crest:

Why Do You Grow Cacti ???

It has always interested me in why people grow cacti

I know that when I first got interested it was the spines. The more unusual the more I had to have it.

If I really had to pick out why I would have to say the hairier/woolier the better. Oh and the spines of course. Then there are the flowers...........some will dwarf a plant. I am also hooked on taking photos of them (in case you hadn't noticed )

Like these I took on Sunday. Who would believe two different pilosocereus would be flowering ...

Hello everyone, I just joined after searching for something on the net and 'discovered' this site. I started collecting cacti in 2007 and have decided that Astrophytums are my favourites. The cacti are slowly taking over the front verandah, lol. I live in Western Victoria.

Rather than continue on about inter-generic hybrids in the post below, i was quite interested in intergeneric hybrids a while back and would like to share. here are some i found with some net browsing:

i would like to point out although intergeneric hybrids involving seemingly unrelated plants are highly unlikely it is possible in some isolated instances. And as already pointed out Trichocereus x Echinopsis are not inter-generic hybrids as Trichocereus are now incorporated within Echinopsis. ...

Will the removed offsets of this species produce roots? If not i obviously won't bother. anyone done this before? i really don't want to waste a single one.

I have read that self-rooted culture of Toumeya is difficult but possible, requiring cold dry wintering, ...

Opuntia ID

Some sort of Opuntia I guess. Spineless and the older pads are completely cylindrical and thick for their length.

Possibly a rare or uncommon species, and much potential for grafting.

Pm me if you want some.
