well here it is:

(sorry about the extremely dodgy pic quality, cam doesn't have macro)
mammillaria luethyi @ 2 days old
1/5 aint to bad, rather i am surprised anything germinated at all, given this species' reputation.

Very nice Lewis - but 1 out of 5 makes it even pricier. Hope it grows well for you.

look at the dates these photos were taken, its a crazy growth rate. a year!
luethyi seems to be capable of some pretty phenomenonal growth if grafted.
Unfortunately i don't have this kind of grafting skill as i don't have much experience/practise, although just then i tried grafting an Astro asterias cv. 'Supar Syiowa' seedling to pereskiopsis. will see how it goes.
i also just got a heap of A. asterias cv 'Snow floccosus' seeds, will get sowing so i have a heap to play around with for grafting.

As an interesting point about the luethyi, it was only discovered in 1996 and named in 1999, and it was never legally exported from Mexico and all plants in cultivation are technically illegal. however the fact remains that it is now quite widespread in collections overseas, particularly in europe, where it is believed that almost all plants in circulation are vegetative decendants of one, illegally imported plant.

I thought it was just a standard 'ball' shaped mamm. wow - thats an amazing plant...
once you get some size you could try cutting off and grafting each 'arm' maybe.. ?

Indeed. In the wild it is a very tiny plant, and it was originally thought to be a Pelecyphora or Turbinicarpus.

The 'arms' are tubercles like those found on any other Mammillaria, just more pronounced than in most.
These can be grafted and will produce offsets but it's probably physically easier to graft the whole plant and regraft the offsets produced.
