Yep, I'm using Firefox 2 with Adblock, and I'm not getting any ads or popups anywhere. It also seems to stop most spyware in its tracks too.

Ok, so how do I actually install the Adblock addon once I have downloaded the file? Or do I need to place the file in a directory? If so, which one? This is the first time I have tried firefox. And yes...my favicon works now

Well, from memory after you've installed firefox, you run it as per usual. Under "Tools" there should be an item labelled "Add-ons". Typically, you find, install and run all new enhancements to firefox via this menu. The whole process should be largely automated and you shouldn't have to do too much yourself.
