Thanks for sharing...

hey, do you know any site that explains/describes what each of these funky names for astro mean and/or possible source of the first cultivar/seed source?

from what I can understand, fukuru means it has some extra half-ribs or something, a bit like mosntrose, but not quite. where does it come from?

Fukuryu is Japanese word, meaning "complex rise".
Fukuryu is developed by a famous Japanese cactus collector, Rampo-san.
He started to develop fukuryu by two types of myriostigma monstrosas in the begining of 1990s.
Fukuryu gene was fixed at F-4 generation but he added ornatum monstrosa gene later.
The development of fukuryu is shown step by step in his website but it is written in Japanese.
Many other Astro cultivar names are also Japanese words.

Hanazono, can you elaborate on why the Astrophytum has been the subject of such extensive cultivation in Japan? Is there a reason this genus has become so popular?

Lachy
Cactus collection is a popular hobby in Japan and there are around 80 professional cactus nurseries in there.
Since they only can have limited space (land for greenhouse), the way of collection is deffernet from Australia.
They do not collect so many species.
Eg. A hobby cactus collector collects Astrophytum asterias only, no others.
I intoroduced "Rampo-san" in my previous note. Rampo-san means Mr. Myriostigma.
He just collects Astropuytum myriostigma only for more than 40 years.
Almost all Astrophytum cultivars are developed by hobby cactus collectors, not professional nursery men.
Astrophytum is easy to germinate from seeds and you can see flowers in relatively short time, and so it is not difficult to develop cultivars.
There are around 300 types of asterias cultivars because asterias is very popular and many hobby collectors are in Tokyo area. Myriostigma cultivars are also around 300, developed by hobby cactus collectors living in Osaka area.
Many cultivars of Ariocarous and Gymnocalycium have been developed also.

Hello Hanazono, thanks for your answers.
What do you think about the seedlings in the pics?

Carlo & Daniele

They are all very nice fukuryu.
Khoyo, right side on top and second photos are also very nice.

I think your fukuryu is mixed ornatum gene which is newest cultivar.
I do not know size of parent plants but the current issue of fukuryu is small size, not growing as like normal myriostigma.

Thanks Hanazono!
The koh-yo are just repotted and they lose a bit their colour, they are from this sowing:

About fukuryu, those plants come from this crossing:

and the first nudum one comes from this plant:

I think:
Both parents have ornatum gene.
Grandma also has ornatum gene.

I do not have fukuryu by myself.
I am not sure any fukuryus are or are not in Australia.
