Thanks for clarifying the meaning of the names Hanazono. That sort of information very difficult to find and I think understanding what the masters that bred these plants had in mind is much easier when you know what the names mean.
There are so many names that I have wondered about the meaning of, Hakujo, koh-yo, banjaku, hakugaku etc. we need a dictionary of translated cultivar names!

Thanks Hanazono.

Tripsis, I find you generally get 4 ribbed plants when you plant 3 ribbed seeds Smile Be very wary of anyone selling seeds which state 3 ribs, this form is very unstable and will grow extra ribs at any given time. From my experience even with very good seeds you will get 1 in 10 three ribbed plants and nearly all of them will form extra ribs eventually. I get most of my seed through trades etc from collectors.

Crypto, I think the Cultivar dictionary would be awesome !

HN

There are 5 types of 3-ribbed myriostigma.
One of 5 types, Old Yoshinaga type tends to increase number of ribs eventually. I am not sure what type you have.
On the other hand, a type tends to reduce number of ribs and becomes 2-ribbed plant rarely.

cryptocarpa and HN

There are so many Japanese origin Astrophytum cultivars.
asterias: 500
myriostigma: 250
others: 100
I do not know how many cultivars are overseas (Australia) currently.
I can tell you specific ones eg
Hakujo: "white lines" appear on the top of ribs on myriostigma, ornatum and both hybrids
kho-yu: "autumn foliage" turning color in autumn to spring, colors are yellow, orange, red and chocolat
A. myriostigma and related hybrids, M. bocasana and some Ariocarpus show kho-yo
banjyaku: " large rock" the name of hybrids, ornatum x myriostigma
hakugaku: "white mountain"

Thanks for the names translations Hanazono I have wondered a long time about some of them.
Echinopsis, you have some nice plants there!
Just wanted to share something that turned up in my seedlings recently. I have couple like this so I plan to graft them and hopefully breed a stable form over the next few years. It's a spiral form onzuka tricostatum that is reverting to Quadricostatum.

Khoyo will be the best color in winter and spring.
We keep cactus under a micro-climate and a khoyo will start to change the color anytime when it thinks antumn is comming.
khoyo needs 4 seasons, natural or simulated.

Shimairi means "with striped pattern".
You can see brown stripes starting to appear on the top of Onzuka.
Compared to a normal Onzuka, the word of Shimairi is added if the plant had striped pattern.

Hanazono

thanks for the info Hanazono, very helpful.
Now I know the right word for brown V-marks on Onzuka.

Great plants. What is the "stocking cap" myrio cultivar name, in English, that is?

Or is it just stocking cap? Wouldn't mind getting some seeds for that one. Looks pretty unusual.

I lost several good size of Astrophytum myriostigma cv khoyo last year.
I tried to regain numbers and grafted seedlings in this season.
The photo is cv red-bean khoyo, kikkow.
The scion has been turning color because of autumn.

IXOXI

They rotted out.
They were degrafted, own-root, around 12~15cm.
