PostSubject: cutting out Hylocereus areolas   Mon Mar 21, 2011 3:49 pm

Hello all

Over the summer break i've successfully put down about 350+ grafts onto Hylocereus undatus. However I did not remove any of the areolas. I do see new growth coming out of the areolas but the scions are attached and growing. So I don't really see the need for removing them. In fact when new growth does occur i usually attempt to graft another seedling onto it so I've got 2 or 3 per rootstock.

I've read a couple times online that removing them will force all the nutrients into the scion. Does anyone have any experience with grafting onto this rootstock with and without removing areolas?

To be honest, i would think that a fast growing rootstock wouldn't have any problems with supplying multiple slow growing scions with all the nutrients it could handle but that is just me...

Personally I wouldnt bother - as you said, hylocereus are very fast growing. Cutting the areoles out is likely to either kill the stock or cause it to pup profusely. I would just cut pups off as you see them or graft onto the pups
