They're very reasonable prices.

I picked up mine from ebay (a pet supplies store, nursery grade heat mats are VERY expensive, they are better though), mine was $60, though it has no thermostat, I had to buy a thermostat control seperately, which cost me $40, my setup is far from ideal and it entailed certain difficulties when rigging it up.

So it was $100, plus the annoyance, I suggest looking at the link slim6y put up, I will definitely consider buying a thermostatically controlled heat mat from them if I decide to upgrade my system in the future, which I undoubtley will.

Mine is the one on the top, the MICROCLIMATE one, can't remember what size, but it is 30 watts. I recommend them, though you will need a thermostat.

what is it for san rainbow? if its for germinating seeds i recommend a lamp inside a big foam box like a broccili box.

i used to have a cathode ray computer screen and would pop tuppaware containers on the back of it to collect the heat.

I do agree with Haga though... for the price it's ideal... but... I think the heat mat provide a more constant and larger area of heating and is easier to control.

A thermostat is required. You can pick them up from the same site.

I trust my thermostats with my snakes' lives! So I would certainly trust them with cacti!

There are cheaper options such as heat cord (around $20 for a few metres). But heat cord has a low surface area for heating.

An aquarium tank with lamps and a fluro gro tube may also be a good idea.

You can often buy second hand aquariums for less than $20!

I disagree, you should use a heat mat for germinating seeds, lights just don't cut it in my experience.

hey Rainbow - all that stuff on the site is good. It all depends on what you want to pay.
For me, I just put my seed in an aquarium (empty of water) place the seeds in trays in a plastic bag and have a 25W standard light globe for heat. I line the aquarium with alfoil, cover the top and presto - seedlings.
You can do the same for $100 - 150 as I did for about $4 from scrap around the home.

Good luck - remember it is all really down to heat and water to provide humidity.

Lights are fine if they are not fluro's and used to generate your heat as opposed to bottom heat (heat mat)
A lot of people use grow light type fluro to promote growth once things are germinated.

Trig, you are right - we are just at crossed meaning with our term light. I simply mean a light globe to generate heat.
