Hi,

I’ve recently begun to really expand my cacti collection that I have had for some years with the odd cacti that I can find at the local nursery and bunnings etc. I have been interested in growing cacti from seed. I have successfully grown some unknown cacti seedlings from a mixed packet of seeds but I now want to grow specific types. I was wondering what species would be best for me to try to grow as a beginner? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Also I was wondering if anyone had any spare seed for sale or giveaway?

I would think any cereus, trichocereus, echinopsis or mammillaria would be a good place to start. Personally Trichocereus was my first and I found them relatively simple and very rewarding due to the fast growth rate.

I was wondering if I could use a four foot aquarium light to grow the seedlings under? Would it be too bright and would I need a special plant tube ? Would the use of a light enhance the growing in any way ?

That type of light should be fine. Depending what your growing they will generally need natural light after 6months.
