Hi all,
Just bought this Ariocarpus, but I am not sure what species and type it is. One distinctive feature is that each tubercle has a sort of finger sticking out below the main section.
You can see this on almost every mature tubercle in this photo.

If someone can positively identify it, that would be great.
Thanks,
IX

Interesting. Never seen this one before nor can I find it anywhere on the internet.
Could it be an A. retusus var. trigonus hybrid? or a random mutation?
Very rare whatever it is.
Where did you pick it up from?
May I ask how much you got it for + how big is it?

Give me 5 minutes and I'll go out to the cacky cube and measure it.

Ok, this measures 115mm across and 40mm from the gravel to the top of the wool.

That's a reasonable size.
What do you think of the ID? It looks retusus var. trigonus to me except with double tubercles although I am really only going by what it looks compared to other pics on the internet.

Didn't get any info from the person you bought it off?

It had a tag on it, but the lettering has faded so completely, that the only word recognizable (even after photographing and contrast adjusting) is "Ariocarpus" scratch
I can't find anything online about tubercles that look like that, though I am sure it's out there somewhere!

That's a bummer. Good luck getting an ID on it. Maybe share the photos of your plant around on other forums if no-one can help you on here within the next few days? I'm sure they would love to see your plant and they might just have the answer!

Well I know you've got a very unique plant there so just be happy you've got it!

I think the plant on the photo is Ariocarpus retusus.
My retusus has also similar tubercles.

Thanks Hana, what variety of retusus is your listed as? Could it be a furfurfaceus?

Got this off cactus art; here's the link: http://www.cactus-art.biz/schede/ARIOCARPUS/Ariocarpus_retusus/Ariocarpus_retusus_furfuraceus/Ariocarpus_retusus_furfuraceus.htm

A. retusus v. furfuraceus: applied to plants with equilaterally triangular shaped tubercles and abundant wool at the apex
A. retusus ‘furfuraceus’ var. rostratus refers to plants with a more tapered apex to the tubercle.

Are the tubercles equilateral or not?

Thanks for the response, I will have to go take a look to see the size ratios. Still no other reference to any variety that has additional appendages below the tubercle? I think I will have to include this one into my Ario breeding program!

It seems as if no-ones heard of this crazy ario! It seemed unique when I first saw it because I've looked at lots of ario's before and never seen anything like this.

I would definately try and propagate this and see what weird offspring you get.

Did it cost more than a normal ario because of its uniqueness?
An ario that size would have cost a small fortune!

@ Mitchell - It cost a fair bit, but I am hoping to get it to flower and then I can encourage that trait to come out better in future generations. Hanazono has one that also has 'fingers' on it.

@Hana, any chance you'd be able to photo yours for comparison please? Would be good to see how similar they are, and also if it has any cv name or additional description besides Ario retusus.
Thanks
