PostSubject: Greenhouse   Thu Mar 21, 2013 6:21 pm

I am considering purchasing a new greenhouse and planting it out with raised cacti beds. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with cacti in the ground in greenhouses?

I know vegetables such as tomatoes do poorly in greenhouse beds if grown repetitively. Do cacti have any trouble with disease in the soil or air circulation?

Is this idea possible and are there any things I should be warned about?

Thanks

It is possible but it has its pros and cons.
On the one hand growth is good and it saves time to chuck em in a bed plus no cost for pots.
On the other hand if one plant has disease they all do pretty soon and you can't just move them when you want as you need to dig them out and pot them.
I did a bed a few years ago and it got infected with a fungus, Luecocoprinus birnbaumii, it turned all the soil hydrophobic and locked up the nutrients. Even washing the roots and potting into fresh soil didn't work and now the pots have that that fungus too. In the long run the fungus exhausts its food supply and dies then the soil can absorb moisture and the plants start to grow good again but your looking at about 50% reduction in growth for around two seasons when this stuff gets established.
Ants are the other issue, they spread mealies and scale and they find plants in a bed much quicker than ones up on a bench. I actually smear a line of Vaseline around the legs of my benches and it stops pretty much every bug without wings from getting up there.

Lol thanks crypto. That Vaseline idea is brilliant. I've been having major issues with ants eating all my loph fruits. Lil bastards!!

i got one of those large corrugated iron planters, available at Bunnings,Mitre10 and really cheap at Aldi, its down one side of the greenhouse,it took 10 bags of cactus mix and everything is growing really well with fantastic drainage,im going to put another across the back shortly, they come in all shapes and sizes even triangular for the corners
