PostSubject: Hello from Slovenia   Sat Jun 01, 2013 3:47 am

Hello there. My name is Maja and I live way up noth in Slovenia. That would be somewhere in the middle of Europe. I apologise in advance for my gramatical errors, because my native language isn't English. But I promisse I will try to do as little mistakes as I can. cheers

I collect cacti for two years now and have somevhere over 140 spicies. And some succulents aswell. Last year my housband built me a greenhouse, so many of my cacti can stay out in the GH all year round. And some most delicate ones I bring into a house.

I think that is enough for now. If someone want to know more please feel free to ask.

HI Maja,

Welcome aboard would love to see some photos.
I would like to ask what are your temperatures like in Slovenia during winter and summer.
Here in Sth Australia we have temperatures mid to high 30's in summer to around 10-15 degrees Centigrade in winter when it mostly rains so most cacti need protection during winter from the rain.
Do you have specialist cacti and succulent nurseries there in Slovenia as here in Adelaide we don't, in fact very few nurseries have cacti for sale.
Most of my collection is either from seed fellow society members or mail order.
The only problem here in Australia is we cannot import plants from overseas with out great expense and government red tape. So it is mostly never done.

Hello Cactuscook. Thanks for your wellcome letter. Where to begin. I live in zone 7 if looking on plant hardiness zones. We used to have more cold winters in the past as we do now. But like you said for your region we get lots of rain too. In the summer we get to around 35C. I don't think I remember higher temps. In the winter there comes a Siberian cold as we love to say and we get down to -15C. Last winter we didn't get even -10C more than 3 nights. In whole winter that is.

Talking about nurseryes. I'm lucky to live pretty close to one. It is in the same town where I go to work. And too close to a school where my older son goes to a basketball twice a week afternoons. I have about an hour of time to spent. You can imagine what I bring home if I happen to go there to spent my time. Very Happy

And I got several plants (cacti and succulents) by post shippement. Inside European union there is no limit sending plants. Different thing it would be to sent oversees. I only try that with seeds, never plants. So I don't know really.

Regards. Maja

OK. Lets try again. I wrote this post already, but didn't show on the forum. Here we go:

This astro isn't mine. I bought it for my Father-in-law's birthday. He loves cacti too.

Crassula ovata. My biggest Jade plant.

Escobaria dasyacantha ssp. chaffeyi:

Glandulicactus uncinatus var. wrightii. This kind of cactus flowered firs time for my eyes. But I was hooked long before that. Not only by those spines but because of that marvalous flowers. I need to get me one with more dark brown colour too.

Two from my latest purchase: Lobivia cardenasiana:

and Lobivia maximiliana var. westii:

Lobivia winteriana - one flower:

and several flowers; different angle and different time:

Mammillaria hahniana. This one has no timer. It flowered deep into winter season last year. And was one of the first ones flowered this spring:

Mammillaria zeilmanniana:

This is some of my plants. More you can see on my Picasa web: (P.S. Internet link delited because of 7 days limit. I will add it later) The site isn't quite updated, but there is still much more than I can upload here.

And this is my little greenhouse:

Picture taken last year with my little boy infront of it an myself in it. sunny

Welcome and those are some nice plants.
I like the greenhouse but don't have the space for one like that.
