It would be around 5 years I would think. I have had it for 3. It only developed the top "cephalium" about a year ago. This is the first fruits Smile By the looks there will be more soon.

Wow! That's a decent size for 5 years. Do you know what species it is? I really like those red hairs/spines? In the cephalium

even if grown extremely fast i can't see this being any younger than 7 years from seed, probably 8, the generally accepted time melocacti get cephaliums. some can take longer, 2 decades for some of the slowest real mexican ones apparently. what species is it? nice orange/red bristles in the cephalium... which tell me matanzanus, but is looks too big and has too many ribs.

Yeah it could be 8 years lewis but I think that would be the most. It was about 8cm diameter when I got it three years ago. I'm not 100% on the species either but I think its Melocactus Peruvianus. There are so many melos and they all look very similar.

spot on... from a taxonomic viewpoint this is one of the most complex, variable and confusing Genera in the cactus family. over 70 synonyms for 40 species, not counting varieties, subspecies etc. and then there are different clones and even different individual specimens in the one population that look so different they originally described as different species.
yeah it looks quite like the M. peruvianus in my melo book. Nice plant in any case Smile grow those seed!

The Synonymous names for Melos are just crazy. Two more fruits have just popped their heads up Smile
