PostSubject: When to remove lids from seedlings   Sun Sep 28, 2008 2:06 pm

I have several takeaway containers I used to germinate Echinocactus, Mammillaria and Lithops species that I sowed about 4 weeks ago. Most of the seeds have germinated and I was just wanting to find out at what point I should take the lid off. Or is it best to leave the lids on until they get a little bigger.
Any advise much appreciated.

You can leave the lid on for months if you wish to. As long as the seedlings are happy and no fungi is growing leave them. I and others I know have kept them in baggies for 6 months and some longer.

I'd leave them on until just before they reach the top, (if they are tall) or with the case of the mams - until they have some spines - then let some air in to harden them off.

Lithops - don't let them get too wet and they will be fine - there is a point when they suddenly don't like the extreme moisture. I would err on the side of caution with them.
