PostSubject: In a warm afternoon   Sun Oct 12, 2008 4:30 pm

This afternoon became quite warm. I went to my greenhouse and found luethyis were in bloom.
I had more than 100 luethyi plants but reduced numbers lately.
These plants in photo have a short stock buried in pottingmix.

Koda
I sowed 30 seeds in Sep 2004, germinated just one.
I grafted the seedling in Oct 2004.
The plant grew quickly and removed pups in Dec 2005 and grafted on Myrtilocactus geometrizans.
The stock of geometrizans meets luethyi scion well and grafting will complete in 48 hours.
Plants in photo are pups grafting done in Dec 2005, around 3 years after grafting.
Last year I cut stock to 3 cm length.

I tried to grow some, but the very expensive seed I bought from OS failed to germinate - put me off given the cost, but it was only 5 seeds.

Might try again now that it is warmer - Calycium goes off to surf the web for luethyi.

Han - if you ever want to sell a pup - PM me (yes an obvious plug - given I'm a local boy from Adelaide I would even pick it up at a mutual spot - shameless plug finished Surprised )

Don't be too disheartened, some of those choice Mammillarias (luethyi, theresae, etc.) have very poor germination rates.

I sowed ten luethyi seeds last year and only one germinated which I managed to graft onto a hylocereus stock. I thought I was going to lose it as the stock I used had no roots and took forever months to root up and the scion had almost dried up. Anyhow when the roots did finally develop the luethyi grew very rapidly but it only had a month of the growing season left(end of Autumn). I will post a pic tomorrow.

I also sowed over 100seeds from theresae and about 25 seeds of Pelecyphora asseliformis and had similar poor results. Eight theresae and i asseliformis germinated. The seeds were from my own plants and both required the tweezer treatment since the the seeds are stored within the plant.

CB,
Wow - I have never had as poor results except with above... Most seeds I am quite successful with. 100 seeds is a lot of seed to get 8 from.

good luck with your single luethyi - may it grow to over 100 like Hanazona's

Here's a not so clear photo (I hope I've uploaded it correctly) of my little graft. I'm hoping that it really kicks off this summer so that i can regraft a few pups or turbercles.

Calycium, I usually have much better results with other types of seeds. I sowed over 100 Loph seeds from my own plants last summer and they are doing superbly enclosed in a plastic take-away container.
