PostSubject: Gymnocalycium - chin cactus   Wed Apr 09, 2008 6:36 pm

I pollinated two of my chins last summer and it was an amazing experience watching the vody of the flower fatten and fill with seed. I planted a lot of the seed in late summer and have about 30 nice sized healthy pups. Was wondering if it would be worth putting the spare seeds out on the give away table. I like them, but they are not that rare. I have to admit that their flower is something else though.

I will trade you some Mammillaria matudae seeds and some "unkown false peyote" seeds, your guess is as good as mine as to what they are going to be.

Do you know what species you have?

PD might like some too, I know he likes Gymnos quite alot.

Yeah it's strange when that happens. I often wonder exactly what it is thats makes a cactus flower, or atleast encourages it?

I've got about 40+ seeds that have germinated this year, biggest is about 4mm at the moment.

Really hoping that they flower again this year because the flowers are awesome.

Have you got yours in full sun, 50% shad, 75% shade?

Might be something to watch - I had mine in full sun, right in the middle of summer and they seemed to stand up to the adelaide sun really well (plenty of water too to help)

For some reason I always find Gymnos hard to flower. This summer, as warm as it was, was the first season I've had any blooms from them at all. Therefore, I'm thinking temperature may have a bit to do with it...
