PostSubject: Flowers of asterias seedlings   Sun Dec 07, 2008 8:27 pm

I was away from home for two weeks.
I found my 4 years old asterias seedlings were in flower when I came back. I use 5 cm tube, 35 tubes per pad and so seedlings size are around 5cm diameter. I normally remove all flowering buds from own-root asterias, less than 8cm. I missed to remove buds this time.
Asterias cv kabuto may or may not change flecking pattern during its seedling ages. I keep many seedlings and select good ones.

Awsome Hanazono! To think i pay $12 for my Asterias, when you have a whole sale room worth.
I should really get off my ass and build my prop.
Do you usually remove the buds to incourage the growth of the plant, or for some other reason?

I do not collect seeds from own-root seedlings.
I have several selected, grafted mature plants and collect seeds from these plants.

Yes I remove the buds to incourage the growth of the plant.
The photo is a part of my collection. I have to remove many buds every day in flowering season.

Hanazono, do you have someone to water your plants whilst your away. The reason I ask is that I will away for a month starting just before Christmas. I will have someone (brother) to water them but still worried they might be dehydrated when I get back.

Exclamation *Props* to you Hanazono. I'm really impressed.
If you don't mind me asking, are you in business?
It looks like you have a large scale operation going on there.

PostSubject: Watering   Mon Dec 08, 2008 7:12 am

Cactusboy
The collection of cactus is my hobby and none water during my away.
I ask my wife to open the door of green houses but I do not accept her to water. Watering is critical for cactus growing.
I feed water to my cactus fortnightly in summer.
I think one month without watering is too long in mid of summer.
You may ask someone to water.

KanJe
I am just a hobby cactus collector as same as many menbers of this forum.
I look after all my cactus by myself.
When I moved in Adelaide from NSW 5 years ago, there was a chiken shed in my backyard.
I modified it as a greenhouse, 6m x 12m and is not small. I add a smaller greenhouse, 3.5m x 5m last year.
Since my collection started from seeds, I made the small one for seedlings.
I once kept around 2000 of asterias cv kabuto seedlings and 1000 of cv super kabuto seedlings but I reduced them a bit.
I germinate Astrophytum and Ariocarpus seeds every year, mainly in-house collected seeds and so many many small ones are waiting repotting.

I have some spare pots in my green house Hanazono... Wink
Really, I'm very impressed for a grower who is not in business to be growing Astrophytums and Ariocarpus to this scale.
I would love to have an operation of the same scale one day myself.
Good work mate... Smile

If you want to select good ones it is necessary to do like hanazono does, but a big space is needed...however is always good to see so many plants on flower! Compliments!
