Apart from Ariocarpus, I find this genus be the slowest cactus that I have grown so far.

Does anyone find the same thing?

yeah, really slow indeed.

what in find interesting is that, as far as I am aware, despite Obregonia supposedly being closely related to both Ariocarpus and Lophophora it apparently refuses to hybridise with either?

Yeah my seedlings are pretty slow. I planted them with some Astrophytum, Pelecyphora and Lophophora. The Obregonias are a bit smaller than the Lophs and on par with the Pelecyphora. Still they are heaps better than the Aztekium seedlings I've got going, those buggers are slow.

PostSubject: Attempt rooting   Sun Mar 22, 2009 10:48 am

I think it is the best way to grow cacti seedling with own root even slow growing species but you can also grow them quickly by grafting and degrafting later.
I saw a note said "rooting of denegrii is not difficult" on the internet.
I have been attempting rooting of denegrii.
Degrafted denegrii, diameter is 9.5 cm
Using rooting hormon: yes, liquid one
Rooting medium: Shifted cat litter
I think some roots have come out from the plant in the attched photo.

Welcome to the forum Blossfeldia.
I had a look at your web site and you have an impressive collection. I look forward to talking with you more in the future.

Hanazono - With Obregonias, do you think there is much of a difference in looks between a mature plant on its own roots and a grafted plant?
From what I've seen it's harder to tell than it is with something like a Turb. or Loph.

Crypto - That's the kind of standard of growth I'm aiming for. Beautiful plants by the way. drool
What are they on the bottom left? Eriosyce?

They look like Strombocatcus disciformis to me?

Also, I agree with KanJe, those young plants look great, really healthy.

Hello,

many thanks for the friendly welcome.
I too am looking forward to one or other ideas with you to lead.

KanJe: Also, I would Strombocactus disciformis say.
crypto: Very nice young plant

PostSubject: Appearance of grafted cacti   Mon Apr 06, 2009 9:09 pm

KanJe
The appearance of grafted cacti depends upon the root stock.
Hylocereus undatus and Myrtilocactus geometrizance will give a similar appearance to own-root plant.
Harrisia jusbertii and bonplandii will give stronger spines and woollier appearance than own root one.
When you grafted a super kabut onto a jusbertii, it looked very nice and special but it would return a normal one when you degrafted and rooted.
Trichcereus spachianus has an opposit character of jusbertii.

-Crypto

nice photo's But im wondering what growing medium your using with those tubs. Id love to achieve plants that size in 4 years but I also find them to be really slow growing. Mayhaps it's conditions. How often are your applying fert/type?

Sorry forgot to put names, they are like old friends to me.
O. denegrii
A.trigonis, A.agavoides, Akotschoubeyanus v. Rio verde
Strombocactus disciformis
Pelecyphora asselliformis, This one starts out quick enough but has slowed down. I think it may be due to tiny mites that are almost impossible to see without magnification. Anyone else have these.
