PostSubject: Uebelmannia buiningii flowering   Tue Apr 07, 2009 6:27 am

This is a plant I really like, and it flowered for the first time recently. Looks like an Eriocyce but it is U. Buiningii. As far as I know it is almost extinct in habitat due to overcollecting scratch. Rudolf Shultz and Marlon Machiado in their book on Uebelmannias talk about reintroducimg them to habitat via seed grown in collections . I would like to get involved in this sort of work if anyone has heard of anything like that happening with cacti. This plant is hard to keep going as it needs min 15C in winter. My other ones look like they want to flower in the cold season.
Plant is in a 9cm pot degrafted from pereskiopsis after 4 years from seed.

I have 4 plants of grafted buiningii HU141, 2 years from seed. I crossed each other but failed to make fruits by some reasons.
Have you collect any seeds from your plants?

No luck with seeds either but haven't had 2 flower at sametime yet. Last year some of mine had buds that shrivelled over winter this is first flower open this year. Maybe they survive O.K on the graft through the cold but aren't active enough to ripen seeds...
Interesting the difference in our plants, mine are also HU141 locality. Must be the different stocks as all of mine look similar. This may be one genus where pereskiopsis grafts look more natural than other stocks see seedlings in next post. Uebelmannias are slow when grfted on pereskiopsis compared with other species. E.g Cintia grow about 8 to 10 times faster on perry but Uebelmannias max about 3 times faster. Some Uebelmannia pectinifera I have grafted on Pereskiopsis have grown slower than plants on their own roots. Seems to me that Uebelmannias are not as compatible with the Pereskiopsis stock.

These are 3 years from seed in 90mm pot. They are a bit slow probably cause it is cold here. There is a U.meninsis v.rubra in there too it is the white one.
The big plant is U. pectinifera from seed 4years in 130mm pot.

Yeah I agree. I like how the two cacti from the one species look different between the two growers. I think it's really interesting.

I think wooly appearance of my plant is simply affected by the grafting stock.
I bought 20 seeds from VIC. I sowed seeds same day, grfted same day and onto same species of root stock.
Some of them are different appearace shown in photo.
I am not sure all seeds come from a same plant or not.

Did you pollinate it with another plant from the same seed batch or are you fairly sure that the seed came from different plants?

I bought seeds and I am not sure they come from same seed batch or mixed.

Since buiningiis were in flower through this winter, I did crossing continuously.
It seems I have got fruits finally.
