PostSubject: Discocactus   Wed Nov 11, 2009 8:06 am

It has continued hot days in here, SA.
Discocactus have started flowering.
I took this photo early morning yesterday.
Right bottom is heptacanthus v griseus, all others are horstii.
Discocactus are night-flowering, white color with a scent.

Discocactus are not self fertile and you need two plants at least to make seeds.
Stigma is also deep in flower and need a special process for pollination. I sowed seeds collected from these plannts and germinated quite well, around 100 seedlings.

I covered over my greenhouses by 70% shadecloth on 7th of this month.
I prepared for the current heatwave.

heptacanthus v griseus
Sown seeds on 31/08/06 and grafted seedlings.
Cut stock shorter and buried in soil this year
The character of grafted plant has still remained and opened many flowers together.
By unknown reason, other griseus were also opened flower in same naight.

G'day hanazono, I gotta say I'm envious of those who can grow these beautiful plants. I have been lucky enough to have several species for all od five minutes. Tassie winters are likely too tough on them!

Well done! and I wish I could catch the scent!

what is the price of Dicocactus , i mean the small ,the avarage , and the big one in your country?
1-For example does disco .horstii is expensive?

2-What about the price of Ariocarpus , uebelmania and obregonia?

3-Do the flower smell good?

4-In which year of their age they give you flowers?

5-Have you ever cross Discocactus pollen ?

6-Do they(Discocactus) give you offset?

The followings are my reply to your question:
1. I have never seen D. horstii plant in Australia market. I bought 20 seeds and propagated.
2. Ariocarpus, Uebelmania and Obregonia
I can see Ariocarpus plants in market but can not see Uebelmania and Obregonia plants.
Ariocarpus needs reasnable growing speed to keep a good appearance. So far I could not see any good appearance Ariocarpus plants in
market. I have never bought any Ariocapus plants.
I propagate all of them, Ariocarpus, Uebelmania and Obregonia from seeds.
3. Scent of flowers is very nice.
4. Own-root plant: ~6 years
Grafted plant: ~3 years
5. Yes I have. You can not see a stigma from outside becuse it is in deep of flower throat. You need a special method for pollination of
Discocactus.
I collect seeds every year from my plants.
6. Own root pant: No offset
Grafted plant: Some offsets

The rooting of cuttings and degrafting plants for Discocactus is not so difficult.
