Anyone know what this is? It's in a book of mine but is not identified. Book is 'Cacti' by Marcus Schneck (pg27 if anyone has it).

It's a Copiapoa...taking a stab I'd say it's C. "gigantea" (which is really just a large form of haseltoniana) The orange wool distinguishes it from C. cinerea or columna alba.

Hi TasV.
I'd say haseltoniana, or longistaminea, or tenebrosa... just going by pics I have found. When all is said and done, give the lumpers time and they'll all be C. haseltoniana or something anyway...

Check out these links:

Copiapoa cinerea & tenebrosa

Copiapoa longistaminea

Copiapoa gigantea

Copiapoa haseltoniana

Cheers for now

Copiapoa tenebrosa looks a pretty good match doesn't it. They must be very ancient plants! I love this photo: http://www.copiapoa.dk/mt.pirales/21eng_landscape_at_Mt._Perales.html

Yes, tenebrosa is now sunken into haseltoniana as well...and probably rightly so, a lot of the Copiapoa names are pretty dubious....
