Is Opuntia compressa available in Aus?

It is apparently now synonymous with the common O.ficus-indica...?

I believe that Opuntia compressa is synonymous with O. ficus-indica. However, desert-tropicals.com lists several varieties of O. compressa, which may or may not be within the country, and knowing our history with wayward Opuntiads, good luck on getting them in...

yeah, that's why I started this thread. Wink

I like the way scions grafted to this stock look quite natural, not distorted.

I was always under the impression it was ficus-india and compressa was a synonym for it?

These are the synonyms I was able to locate:

Opuntia rafinesquei, Opuntia opuntia, Opuntia macrarthra, Opuntia humifusa or (O. numifusa?)

No O. ficus-indica mentioned that I can find.

Opuntia compressa IS now included in ficus-indica. Wink

however compressa appears to be much lower growing and smaller-padded than the 'true' ficus-indica.

all images i google on humifusa and compressa look like an enormous plant around the corner from my house in someones garden. it has very small p-ads and they look very thin... i have not plucked up the courage yet to ask for a cutting.

i have some ficus indica and it it looks nothing like it, i also have opuntia microdaisys and another opuntia which i think may be subulata? but it has small elongated cylinder pads with long spines i have not yet identified this plant. i tried a graft but no success. Smile

Look at the http://www.efloras.org/ website for the currently accepted names. These are internationally recognized names for plants. Type in Opuntia humifusa in the search box for example and it will give you the synonyms and the name of the publication which contains the revision. Hope this helps.

A word of warning. 90% of images on Google relating to Opuntia are incorrect. Same rule applies for many other cacti and succulents. The majority of Aloes on Google are wrong. I have photos of Opuntia humifusa (syn O. compressa) but have to work out how to post them. Smile
